The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
