Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
