A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
